Materials Fee: $15 one time

Course Description – Students will learn style techniques and basic essay structures and strategies. We will work through the Institute for Excellence in Writing Structure and Style techniques the first semester. Unlike many creative writing programs, this more classical system stresses modeling and builds a firm foundation of specific skills. As students practice each format and master each technique, they develop confidence and consequently creativity. Junior & high school students will see instant improvement in their written communication. During the second semester, students will go from report writing to writing an elegant academic essay. Piece by piece, I will walk students through the entire essay-building process using The Elegant Essay. From captivating introductions, to compelling descriptions and convincing conclusions, students learn to bring their words and their arguments to life. With explanation and practice exercises, it is an excellent extension and refinement of IEW Unit VIII. Students will write different types of academic essays (such as persuasive, comparison/contrast, descriptive, and cause/effect essays) on a variety of subjects and prompts, while practicing the style techniques from the first semester.

World Literature & Composition

World Literature & Composition Image

Course Description

World Literature and Composition will guide high school students as they read, enjoy, discuss, and analyze a spectrum of literary selections from worldwide authors and poets of various eras. Genres will include short stories, novels, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Students will learn literary terms and study the rhetorical techniques authors use to communicate their messages. For each fiction work, students will analyze character, plot, setting, conflict, point of view, and theme, and will look for features such as irony,  foreshadowing, and symbolism. For nonfiction works, students will learn to read critically and extract important points. For poetry,  students will study typical patterns and techniques the poet uses to convey meaning.

Students will practice techniques of composition such as prewriting, outlining, drafting, revision, and editing. Various types of compositions will be written, such as descriptive/narrative, comparison/contrast, theme-based literary analysis, and a research paper with MLA formatting. All essays will be revised before being considered final. Students will learn about paragraph structure, thesis and topic sentence techniques, organization, style, mechanics, transitions, parallelism, variety in sentence patterns, and other key writing skills. Each semester, students will write and revise three to four essays, and will complete one creative project per semester. Essays will be scored using a detailed rubric analyzing the student’s accomplishments in the areas of content, organization, style, and mechanics.

A typical class period will include discussion of literature selections the students have been reading, occasional comprehension quiz games (some designed by students), and the sharing of creative projects students have produced to showcase their understanding of the literature they have just read. Each class period will also include a brief time of writing instruction.

Starting Points

Starting Points Image

Starting Points satisfies a full-year course of English, and more, for either 8th, 9th, or 10th grades. Through a thorough analysis of literature, reading and understanding the plot, character, and theme, students also discover the world view woven into each story. In this course the student will study literature, compare world views, refine writing skills, employ Biblical principles, and examine the foundations of American history and government. These several streams of academic discipline are unified under the framework of biblical principles which give us a coherent answer for meaning and morality along with the origin and destiny of human life.

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to establish the solid foundation of a Biblical world view in the heart and mind of  your student. After learning the details of a biblical world view, the students will practice analyzing literature and movies while looking for the author’s world view. These lessons can be applied in the future as each student continues to study literature in high  school and college, helping each of them to stand strong while facing ideas which compete with a biblical world view. The study of world views provides a compass for giving direction in the evaluation of all the ideas that will confront us in life. Students will need to think through and thoroughly understand the ideas learned in order to compose them into the essays required for each of the units studied. Instead of tests, students are given instruction for putting what they learn into written words. This is a profitable challenge because one has to understand a topic well in order to write about it. Essays include informational, theme, contrast, comparison, cause and effect, and persuasive.

This study is also an excellent preparatory course for World Views of the Western World, a unique series of three high school classes that integrate the study of the foundation and formation of Western civilization through its art, history, literature, philosophy, science, government, music and economics and evaluates all of this through the framework of biblical principles. This is a unified study of Western civilization based on the world views of each time period and their implications on society. All ideas are examined against the biblical world view, forming a life habit of checking viewpoints against the truths of the Bible and preparing students to give Christian answers in all fields of study.

Lost Tools of Writing

Lost Tools of Writing Image

Students will learn how to gather information, sort it, and express it in effective and appropriate ways. In the Student Workbook, the material is presented in a logical sequence so that, through this ordered presentation, they will be able to see the “big picture” and the specific daily steps that they follow. This course is aimed at students between 7-9th grades , as a solid preparation for high school composition.

Classical Rhetoric consists of five Canons, and the first three define the writing process. They answer your main challenges when you write: 1) Coming up with ideas, 2) Putting your ideas in order, 3) Expressing your ideas appropriately. “Solving these challenges was the goal of classical rhetoricians like Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian.

They noticed that people overcome them by working through three stages, one for each challenge.” These stages are: Invention- what to write, Arrangement- ordering, outlining, Elocution- expressing your ideas , style . In our class we will read a new story or book every three weeks, practice these Canons (Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution) in order, one per week, finally putting them together in a persuasive essay. For each essay we write during the year, we will acquire new tools to add to each Canon.

These papers seem like very rudimentary persuasive essays in the beginning. However, learning to use these tools of writing will increase the student’s capacity to reason clearly and speak eloquently on future high school essays of all topics: literary analysis, poetry, creative writing, and definitely persuasive writing (which appears on the SAT and AP tests). And while these academic pursuits are worth our discipline, the higher goal is that we can think through and evaluate all the decisions in our life before our Savior. Looking deeply at the choices and consequences of the characters in these well crafted stories will begin to inform and affect the student’s own decisions and give us as parents and mentors the vocabulary to talk to our kids about their choices.
