Friday Classes

HEART Academy offers classes for home schooled students from 3rd-12th grade. Home school classes meet each Friday beginning in September and end in that last Friday of May. HEART classes do not meet during the month of December after Thanksgiving for 6 weeks.

Classes are categorized by the following divisions:

  • Lower Academy : classes for students in grades 3-6.
  • Upper Academy : classes for students in grades 7-12.
  • Upper & Lower Academy : classes for students in grades 3-12.

However, home school classes can be available to students outside these ranges based on your assessment of his or her readiness and skill aptitude for a class.

ASL2U, will build upon ASL1U. It will also include more vocabulary and grammar skills along with more detail expressive and receptive conversational skills. Deaf culture and deaf community information will be studied which includes a book report about the Deaf. The use of modeling, conversation, classroom activities will be highly encouraged. This course is for 8-12 grade students who truly desire to build upon their current ASL knowledge.

Spanish 1, this course is designed to teach the student basics of the Spanish language as spoken in Latin America. Students learn basic vocabulary, greetings, pronunciation, short Spanish conversations and phrases in a fun environment, and basic grammar structures along with introduction to some verb conjugations. Students develop a beginning conversational ability. This course is for high school level and mature middle school students (younger students may be accepted only at the discretion of the teacher) This course will prepare the student for Spanish 2.

Course Content: Each text will provide to extend their Spanish vocabulary in order to eventually be able to speak and understand Spanish. We will be using different books, tapes and visuals to enhance their learning process of Spanish. They will also receive by email some short conversations to start practicing to communicate in Spanish.

Spanish 2 will provide you with the tools to be able to meet Spanish speaking people, to have a friendly conversation, to introduce yourself and your family to others, to order a meal in a restaurant, to book a room or make another accommodations, to ask for directions, to buy a ticket and travel being confident you will get around fine, etc., to help you to socialize and being able to communicate in Spanish.

The students will review basic vocabulary, work on their pronunciation, and have the chance to practice during the classroom and enhance their conversational ability.

This course is for high school level and mature middle school students (younger students may be accepted only at the discretion of the teacher) This course will prepare the student for Spanish 3.

Spanish 3 will provide you with the tools to be able to meet Spanish speaking people and communicate with them. By the end of this class the student should be equipped to carry a friendly conversation and to write a small report using proper structure.

The students will continue learning new vocabulary, work on their pronunciation, and have the chance to practice during the classroom and enhance their conversational ability.

This course is for high school level and mature middle school students (younger students may be accepted only at the discretion of the  teacher)

Course Content: The curriculum used is a unique multimedia program that takes the student from beginner to advance level in 46 lessons, this is the 2nd year where we complete it.

Students of Spanish 3 course will work at an advanced level. There is an excellent presentation of grammar concepts and conversation skills, plenty of examples, exercises, culture notes, an extensive glossary, dialogues, audio exercises and free online learning as well.

The students will continue learning new vocabulary, work on their pronunciation, and have the chance to practice during the classroom and enhance their conversational ability.

American Sign Language 1 (ASL 1)

Course Description: ASL1U, will build on vocabulary and grammar skill along with working on expressive and receptive 469 conversational skills. Deaf culture and deaf community information will be studied. The use of Prezi, PowerPoint presentations, video 470 clips, modeling, conversation, and classroom activities. This course is for 7-12 grade students who truly desire to learn ASL. Younger 471 students may attend at the discretion of the teacher if they cannot go to ASL1La.

Assessment: Parents involvement in discussion and evaluation of students’ work will occur from time to time and is a priority to keep the class in sync. 

Workload: Homework will be assigned almost weekly to help strengthen their conversation foundation in ASL. I will expect a No Voice Lab (NVL) once per quart and attend one deaf event per semester. Both the NVL and the deaf event will require a report.

Periodic quizzes with be given including fingerspelling, vocabulary and grammar. Each student will be expected to create a story in ASL as part of their final exam at the end of the year.

Grading/Assessment: Each student will be evaluated based on their participation, quizzes and the described assignments stated above.
