Lost Tools of Writing Level 2

Lost Tools of Writing Level 2 Image

The Lost Tools of Writing is a course in classical rhetoric. We strive to gently introduce students to the language of the classical tradition so that when they read great books by authors like Aristotle, Shakespeare, etc. there is no language barrier. The Lost Tools of Writing lays foundations for every kind of writing and even speech in the persuasive essay. Writers who internalize these tools spend the rest of their lives applying and adapting them to different contexts, essay forms, poems, stories, or any specific instructor’s requirements. Students learn stylistic techniques that they apply to reading and writing poetry; they cultivate a narrative sense to help them write stories; they practice gathering and evaluating testimony, the root of every form of research. Every essay practices logic, debate, and public speaking.

Lost Tools of Writing Level 1

Lost Tools of Writing Level 1 Image

The Lost Tools of Writing is a curriculum published by the Circe Institute, a non-profit organization that exists to promote and support classical education in the school and in the home.  In the classical tradition, the teacher/mentor focuses on the thinking that leads to good writing. Andrew Pudewa, who wrote the IEW writing curriculum recommends The Lost Tools of Writing as the logical next step afterIEW. He travels with Andrew Kern from Circe to speak about the transition from writing with IEW to writing with The Lost Tools of Writing. In these talks, Andrew Kern explains the three universal problems of writing and how to solve them using the tools that Aristotle and the great classical educators mastered. This curriculum guides the student, one step at a time, from simply reporting facts to supporting an opinion of his own.

Course Description – Students will learn style techniques and basic essay structures and strategies. We will work through the Institute for Excellence in Writing Structure and Style techniques the first semester. Unlike many creative writing programs, this more classical system stresses modeling and builds a firm foundation of specific skills. As students practice each format and master each technique, they develop confidence and consequently creativity. Junior & high school students will see instant improvement in their written communication. During the second semester, students will go from report writing to writing an elegant academic essay. Piece by piece, I will walk students through the entire essay-building process using The Elegant Essay. From captivating introductions, to compelling descriptions and convincing conclusions, students learn to bring their words and their arguments to life. With explanation and practice exercises, it is an excellent extension and refinement of IEW Unit VIII. Students will write different types of academic essays (such as persuasive, comparison/contrast, descriptive, and cause/effect essays) on a variety of subjects and prompts, while practicing the style techniques from the first semester.

Course Description

World Literature and Composition will guide high school students as they read, enjoy, discuss, and analyze a spectrum of literary selections from worldwide authors and poets of various eras. Genres will include short stories, novels, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Students will learn literary terms and study the rhetorical techniques authors use to communicate their messages. For each fiction work, students will analyze character, plot, setting, conflict, point of view, and theme, and will look for features such as irony,  foreshadowing, and symbolism. For nonfiction works, students will learn to read critically and extract important points. For poetry,  students will study typical patterns and techniques the poet uses to convey meaning.

Students will practice techniques of composition such as prewriting, outlining, drafting, revision, and editing. Various types of compositions will be written, such as descriptive/narrative, comparison/contrast, theme-based literary analysis, and a research paper with MLA formatting. All essays will be revised before being considered final. Students will learn about paragraph structure, thesis and topic sentence techniques, organization, style, mechanics, transitions, parallelism, variety in sentence patterns, and other key writing skills. Each semester, students will write and revise three to four essays, and will complete one creative project per semester. Essays will be scored using a detailed rubric analyzing the student’s accomplishments in the areas of content, organization, style, and mechanics.

A typical class period will include discussion of literature selections the students have been reading, occasional comprehension quiz games (some designed by students), and the sharing of creative projects students have produced to showcase their understanding of the literature they have just read. Middle School Literature

During class we will have lively conversations about the key concepts and themes from the reading. For each book, we will delve beyond the reading with enrichment activities such as mock interviews with the characters, eating food from the book, acting out a scene, mapping a journey, etc. We will discuss literary terms and literary devices, search for them in the reading and make our own examples. I believe that reading excellent writing is the precursor to producing excellent writing. Consequently, we will be pointing out examples of great writing, and discussing the elements of great writing. Students will take turns presenting the backgrounds of the authors. There will be homework of reading and a few minimal other assignments. Most of the work will be done in class. If a child has reading difficulties, it is acceptable to get an audio version or have a parent read the selection aloud while the student follows along in the book. We will read great books from a wide variety of genres at home, about one per month or so and discuss them in class.
